Electron Dephasing in Mesoscopic Metal Wires

چکیده
The low-temperature behavior of the electron phase coherence time, τφ, in mesoscopic metal wires has been a subject of controversy recently. Whereas theory predicts that τφ(T ) in narrow wires should increase as T as the temperature T is lowered, many samples exhibit a saturation of τφ below about 1 K. We review here the experiments we have performed recently to address this issue. In particular we emphasize that in sufficiently pure Ag and Au samples we observe no saturation of τφ down to our base temperature of 40 mK. In addition, the measured magnitude of τφ is in excellent quantitative agreement with the prediction of the perturbative theory of Altshuler, Aronov and Khmelnitskii. We discuss possible explanations why saturation of τφ is observed in many other samples measured in our laboratory and elsewhere, and answer the criticisms raised recently by Mohanty and Webb regarding our work.

Circuit theory for crossed Andreev reflection and nonlocal conductance
Nonlocal currents, in devices where two normal-metal terminals are contacted to a superconductor, are determined using the circuit theory of mesoscopic superconductivity. We calculate the conductance associated with crossed Andreev reflection and electron transfer between the two normal-metal terminals, in addition to the conductance from direct Andreev reflection and quasiparticle tunneling. D...
متن کاملLow temperature electron dephasing time in AuPd revisited
Ever since the first discoveries of the quantum-interference transport in mesoscopic systems, the electron dephasing times, τφ, in the concentrated AuPd alloys have been extensively measured. The samples were made from different sources with different compositions, prepared by different deposition methods, and various geometries (1D narrow wires, 2D thin films, and 3D thick films) were studied....
متن کاملElectron Coherence and Dephasing in Metal Films, Wires and Rings
The fields of weak localization, quantum interference and dephasing in disordered metal microstructures underwent dramatic advances in the past three decades. We describe the earlier advances, focusing on those at Yale in which Prof. Imry had significant input. We also present a novel physical picture to understand the essential mechanics of dephasing by Nyquist noise. In the late 1970s and ear...
متن کاملGiant higher harmonic generation in mesoscopic metal wires and rings interrupted by tunnel junctions
Higher harmonic generation in mesoscopic metal wires and loops interrupted by tunnel junctions is explored experimentally. When the sample is biased with a sinusoidal varying current, we observe giant higher harmonics in the conductance fluctuations and the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. We demonstrate that the harmonic content is directly related to the probability for an electron to return to th...
متن کاملMesoscopic Aharonov-bohm Oscillations in Metallic Rings
We study the amplitude of mesoscopic Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) diffusive rings. We consider first the lowtemperature limit of a fully coherent sample. The variance of oscillation harmonics is calculated as a function of the length of the leads attaching the ring to reservoirs. We further analyze the regime of relatively high temperatures, when the dephasing due t...
